Notice of Race: 2024 WHALE OF A SAIL

Carlyle Lake, Illinois, September 21-22, 2024

1. Rules, Format, Entry – Racing will be governed by the 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing.  The regatta will be open to all sailing vessels.  Yachts may enter a buoy race series, or long-distance pursuit type race series. For handicapping unique yachts may be assigned a PHRF or Portsmouth number based on their similarity to other types of yachts.  One-design classes with five or more registered will compete for prizes as a separate class.  If fewer than five, which are required to constitute a class, and will be grouped into one or more Portsmouth handicap classes.

2. Venue – Racing activities will emanate from the Carlyle Sailing Association harbor, and courses will be laid between Mile 1 and Mile 5 on Carlyle Lake.

3. Sailing Instructions – Separate sailing instructions will be available for buoy course racing, and long-distance pursuit racing.  These will be available on-line and will be posted on the venue official bulletin board.

4. Courses – Separate courses will be laid for each of the two race types enumerated above.  The buoy course will be constituted of a combination of triangle and/or windward-leeward legs. Classes and handicap groups on the buoy course may be grouped into starting divisions.  Starting division assignments will be posted prior to racing.

5. Schedule – Course and class assignments will be posted on 21 September prior to an organizational Competitors Meeting at 1000.  The first warning signal will be 1100 for the buoy course and the beginning of the start sequence for the pursuit course.  A maximum of six races will be sailed for the buoy course, and a maximum of two pursuit/long distance races will be sailed.

6. Scoring – The low point scoring of RRS Appendix A shall be used on the one-design course by fleet.  The long distance races will score using a pursuit race format.  There will be no “throw out” scores, and completion of one or more races shall constitute a series.

7. Prizes – Trophy awards will be given to the top 3 boats in each class or group.

8. Social Events – A welcome party will occur on Friday evening, 20 September. Bag lunches on Saturday and Sunday available to order online (additional fee of $8.00), plus a barbecue dinner on Saturday will be available to order online for an additional fee of $15 per person.  Water, soda, beer, cocktail beverages are included in the registration fee.

9. Fees - Regatta entry (per boat, includes welcome party, drinks, entertainment, trophies, use of facilities) Postmarked before Wednesday September 8, 2024 shall be $45.00.  Postmarked on/after September 9th, 2024 shall be $55.00.

10. LodgingFree tent camping is available on CSA’s grounds for regatta registrants.  Trailer and mobile home camping will be available in the adjacent camping areas of Hazlet State Park via separate reservation and fee may be made at Reservations can be made online at ExploreMoreIL or Eldon Hazlet State Park at (618) 594-3015.
