EUSTIS: Fifty nine boats launched onto Lake Eustis from 12 states on Friday, March 10 and six races later on Sunday, March 12 Andy Burdick had claimed first place in the 28th Annual MC Scow Mid-Winter National Championships sponsored by the Lake Eustis Sailing Club.

Burdick, who sails in the professional division and hails from Zenda, Wisconsin, took three firsts and three seconds for a total of nine points. Burdick has claimed numerous MC Scow titles over the recent years. Also taking firsts place finishes were Ted Keller of Columbus, Ohio, Tommy Harken of Charleston, South Carolina, and Drew Mize of Arlington, Texas.

The top story of the regatta was that Kelly Reese of Long Lake, Illinois finished first in the amateur division for the second time in two years. She started on day one with a 13th place finish followed by another 13th on the outing on Saturday morning. Then she rebounded with finishes of fifth, third, sixth and sixth for a total of 46 points to defeat Ted Keller who finished with 50 points. Johnny Krawcheck of Atlanta placed third in this division with 73 points.

The Masters Division (those between 50 and 59 years of age) was claimed by Harken with a fourth overall finish with 55 points. He was chased to the title by Lenny Krawcheck who scored 60 points with an overall finish of sixth. Third place went to Tim Fredman of Hartland, Wisconsin with 86 points.

The Grand Masters Division (60 to 69 years of age) went to Jack Kern of Rush Creek, Texas who finished 8th overall with 79 points. He was followed in this division by Winn Story of Atlanta with 94 points and and 13th place overall. The third place trophy went to Charlie Laffitte of Charleston with a 15th place overall finish with 102 points.

The Mega Masters Divison( 70 and over) went to Lake Eustis Sailing Club member Bill Crum of Bartow who tallied 233 points for a 40th overall finish. Curt Bradley of Greenville, Michigan placed second with 242 points and a 44th place finish while Chuck Nichols of Illinois was third with 288 points and 52nd place.

The best showing by a Lake Eustis Sailing Club member was posted by Devin Farley of DeLand who was 18th after the three day affair with 119 points. He was followed by Greg Murphy of Eustis, who not only sailed in the event but also organized it, at 34th while Jim Hoffman of Naples, Crum, Tony Bruskas of Naples, Bill Robinson of Debary, and Candi Robb of Mt. Dora followed.
