2001 Cowtown Classic Regatta Results
The 5th annual Cowtown Classic was held on May 5th and 6th at Hoover Reservoir, Columbus Ohio. The 22 boat turnout was a record high as was the diversity of the participants. We had a husband and wife (a boat for each), a father and daughter (a boat for each), a father and son (1 boat), a husband and wife (1 boat), and two participants from Florida. Saturday's racing was in 10-15 mph northerly breeze, allowing for a extra long windward/leeward course, along the primary axis of the lake. 2nd year MC sailer, and heavy air ace Brian Pace proved that he was on his game opening with a 1, 4, 1. Consistency was Ted Keller's strategy, with a 2, 2, 2, 2 for the day. Despite the breeze, there didn't seem to be much speed difference among the top boats, with a wide variety of crew weights. Ron Styker's famous prime rib was a big hit as was the generous supply of domestic and imported beers. Sunday morning brought a rare eastern breeze, 3-10, with major shifts and holes. We again ran windward leeward courses, but 3 1/2 laps due to the shortness of the legs. Ted jumped to a nice lead, winning the first race of the day and sealed the regatta win without having to sail the final race. The difficult conditions gave everyone a taste of success and failure e.g. "I'm first, no last, no first, wait a minute, where'd she come from?" As we have done for the last 3 years, the Cowtown and Cowan Lake's "Cowan Scowin" regatta in October will be scored together with the winner taking the State of Ohio Championship.
