Cedar welcomed 25 MC scows and 15 C scows to Spring Regatta this past weekend.
It was an exciting and challenging weekend with many different conditions.
Race #1
Course: Windward/Leeward 3.5
Winds: 10-15 mph from the North
With the wind coming out of the north, the sailors had the opportunity
to sail most of the length of the lake. At the start, leeward end of the line was favored
with the key being able to tack onto port and clear the rest of the fleet. This was achieved
by Brian Heimsch, who was then able to gain an early lead. However, the large velocity shifts
that oscillated from one side of the lake to the other forced the sailors to really concentrate
both upwind and down. Brian maintained his lead the entire race and won the first bullet of
the regatta.

Race #2
Course: Windward/Leeward 4.5
Winds: 3-8 mph from the Northwest
After lunch, the sailors headed out for race two but were delayed by general recalls in
the C fleet and postponements as the wind tried to settle down. The shifts continued to
oscillate as the wind picked up and died down repeatedly. The key to success in this
race seemed to not get stuck in the middle, but rather play the sides. Bill Biersach
led at the first windward mark followed by Rick Trester and Dan Fink. On the first
downwind leg, Brian, Dan Zack, and Deb Ziegler rode a puff into the lead. Brian and
Dan continued to battle with each other over the next couple of legs, but neither
could catch Deb who won the race.

After the race everyone came back to the club for a free cocktail party and CLYC’s famous
steak and salmon dinner. The grills were hot and there was plenty of food for all. For the
brave, Jello shots were served for dessert.
Race #3
Course: Windward/Leeward 3.5
Winds: 8-12 mph from the Southwest
Sunday morning brought yet another view of Cedar with a southwestern wind. Once again, Brian
Heimsch took off on an early lead from port end of the line and was caught by the rest of
the sailors. The oscillating winds continued throughout the race and once again required
the sailors to be very focused.
