What a difference 2 weeks make. The 9th annual Cowtown Classic, originally scheduled for April 23-24 was postponed 2 weeks to May 7-8 due to high wind warnings, temps in the 30’s and snow. It was sailed in perfect conditions in Columbus Ohio this past weekend. Temps in the low 70’s and fresh winds of 15-20mph from the NNW allowed long windward-leeward courses on Saturday. The postponement caused some reduction in the total number of boats attending but it was still a memorable competition for the 17 MC’ers who participated. Brian “Big Dog” Pace showed the rest of us in the pack how to do it, finishing with a 1, 1, 1, 2 in the heavy air conditions on Saturday, sailing noticeably flatter, pointing high and going fast upwind and reverse heeling and carving deep angles downwind. Lightning ace Matt Fisher did extremely well sailing his dad’s boat in his 1st MC regatta for a 2nd overall with steady top finishes (2, 4, 6, 1). John Han, from Diamond Lake also sailed well, with a 4, 10, 3, 3, for 3rd overall. Mark White, was 4th overall and 1st Master and Carl Pratt was 5th overall and 1st Grand Master.
Saturday night’s traditional prime rib dinner, hosted by Ron Stryker was a big hit as always but the party
ended early with many headed to the whirlpools and hot tubs to soak. Unfortunately, we used up all of the
good breeze on Saturday and the 5th and 6th races were cancelled on Sunday morning as we waited, watched our
reflections in the mirror surface of Hoover Reservoir.
