(Results and narrative submitted by Jeff Minore on May 21, 2006)
The GRYC Spring Shakedown regatta this weekend produced excellent races, lots of fun, and LOTS of wind! Chuck Harrett got the fleet off right with two Saturday morning races and 19 boats took to the line. While not the biggest fleet, it was very competitive as evidenced by 3 different race winners in the four races. Brien Fox won race number one after a W 2 ½ in a good WSW breeze. Rob Kimball bested the fleet in race two and after lunch many of the skippers decided to add crew. The wind had started the day around 10 but was building and the afternoon races were held in about 15 mph conditions, but puffy and shifty. Brien Fox again won in race number three, an event that saw a few sailors swimming in the cold waters of Reeds Lake. In race number four, Ted Keller won wrapping up a fantastic day of sailing. Everyone enjoyed the sunshine, the beer, the food and the live music for the rest of the afternoon and evening, till showers moved in and the sailors turned roadies helping to pack up the band in record time. Overnight a front moved through bringing bright sun and even more wind on Sunday morning. After gauging the strength of the breeze, the race committee decided that despite the sun, a breeze at 23 MPH and a wind chill of 40 were not conducive to fun or safety and the days racing was called. Thanks to Chuck Harrett, Danielle Ralston, Al Vorel, Mark Boyce, David Satherswaite, Mike Pinckney and Ben Rundquist for running the race committee and crash boats. Thanks also to Karel Vorel, Jaine Minore, and all the GRYC members who helped out in a variety of ways. Finally, thanks to Curt Miller for the hand painted trophies which were awarded to the top five finishers, the top Junior, Woman, Master and Grand Master.
